The First Digital Treatment Companion for People with Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. Staying on treatment is essential, but not always easy. That’s why there's Aida: a digital companion on WhatsApp that supports people throughout their TB treatment.

What is Aida?

Aida is a virtual assistant that supports people undergoing TB treatment via WhatsApp. She offers information, reassurance, and answers to questions 24/7, in the user’s preferred language.

How does it work?

Aida works on WhatsApp, an app many people already use. After a brief registration, users can ask questions about their medication, side effects, or concerns during treatment. Aida responds instantly, in a friendly and clear tone.

Examples:

  • What should I do if I forget my pills?
  • Why do I feel tired after taking them?
  • Can I keep working while on treatment?

Why is Aida important?

  • Many people have questions between clinic visits
  • Aida offers support when no one else is available
  • Everything is anonymous, secure, and tailored to the local context
  • Users say Aida motivates them to stay on track

Aida was developed by KNCV TB Plus, in collaboration with AI experts at OpenAI and Bird.com. It uses the GPT-4o language model and is continuously improved based on user feedback.

Backed by Science

Aida is currently being piloted in multiple countries. In 2025, a field study is underway where people with TB use Aida during treatment. Researchers are evaluating usability, adherence support, and response quality.
