Ethical review board (ERB)

Strengthening global research and innovation capacity is essential in the fight against TB, and KNCV recognizes the importance of this effort. In 2022, KNCV established its internal Ethical Review Board (ERB), which works in close alignment with national ethical review bodies of countries partnering with KNCV.

The primary function of the KNCV ERB is to safeguard human subjects from potential harm associated with the conduct of unethical research. This entails making fair judgments about the potential risks and benefits to study participants. The second function of the KNCV ERB is to provide support to internal audits and record-keeping of KNCV ERB processes.

The KNCV ERB has been set up to provide an independent review of KNCV research protocols to ensure they meet international ethical standards. By doing so, the KNCV Ethics Review Board (KNCV ERB) will:

Protect KNCV investigators from a potential conflict between their pursuit of new knowledge and the welfare of human subjects
Determine the acceptability of the research project in terms of KNCV commitments and country priorities
Ensure that research projects comply with applicable global and laws and standards of professional conduct and practice

The KNCV ERB is composed of six members with diverse backgrounds, bringing together a wealth of knowledge and expertise. The board comprises a chairperson, a secretary, and consultants with expertise in various thematic areas, including clinical research, public health and epidemiology, basic sciences and laboratory medicine, digital health, and more. The KNCV ERB also includes a member who was previously diagnosed with and treated for TB, which ensures that the perspectives and needs of those affected by TB are heard and considered in the research process.
